Time sure went by quickly since June 26, when parents and children were signing up for the LPL's Summer Reading program.
Our staff has compiled the 2017 numbers, handed over by Clerk Shelly Anderson:
The children logged 8,754 books and 15,026 pages.
Nice season, all.

I was excited to join students and teachers from Greenville (SC) County Schools recently as they marked the end of their Summer Reading Camp 2017 with a visit to Biltmore. As part of the program, over 300 students received a copy of Serafina and the Black Cloak through a grant arranged by the county. Here's a photo of some of the kids, the teachers, and myself on the slope of "Diana Hill" at Biltmore Estate.

ABOUT THE SERAFINA BOOK SERIES
Young readers (8-14) and adults of all ages are loving this exciting new book series about a brave and unusual girl who prowls the grand Biltmore Estate amidst the splendor of the Gilded Age and the rugged beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Published by Disney Hyperion and written by award-winning author Robert Beatty, these mystery-thrillers are #1 New York Times Best Sellers and are already being taught in over a thousand classrooms nationwide. Book 1 in the series won the prestigious 2016 Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize for "representing the best in Southern literature." Kirkus Reviews awarded the second book a Starred Review, saying, "Even better than its predecessor, a sequel that delivers nonstop thrills from beginning to end." Shop Now on Amazon:

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, tells the story of Jay Gatsby through the voice of his friend Nick Carraway. Nick, a young man who’d just moved to New York, rents a house in West Egg, a section of Long Island. Adjoining his house is the sumptuous mansion owned by a mysterious neighbour, the wealthy Jay Gatsby. One afternoon, Nick is invited to his cousin Daisy Buchanan’s, estate for dinner with her husband, Tom, and a friend, Jordan Baker. Soon after, as the summer develops, Nick is finally invited to Gatsby’s mansion for a party. There he eventually meets Gatsby and learns his true motives. After Gatsby's party Nick is asked by Gatsby to arrange a meeting with his cousin, Daisy, who was once his true love and has been desperate to rekindle that love.

School is back in session which means the Summer Reading program is officially over! But you can still check out our impressive structure the kids created this summer. Each brick represents 10 minutes read! Thanks to Children's Librarian Rachel Fecho (pictured) for making this summer's program so much fun! #williamjeaneslibrary#wjml#summerreading2017#beforeandafter

Last few days of "summer" and too many books still to highlight as part of #75daysofsummerreading! So, I will spend today doing my #favoritebooks of Summer 2017. (Some have already been posted this summer, some have not). Without further ado: 72/75: My FAVORITE #kidlit books this summer! Some are chapter books, some are graphic novels, but all are ideal books for kids in grades 3-5. ("This Would Make A Good Story Someday" and "Mighty Jack" would work up to 7th grade). Add these to your classroom or library for this age group now! #summerreading#summerreading2017#kidlit#middlegrade#booksuggestions#readingrecommendations#teachersofinstagram#librariansofinstagram#bookstagram#bookaday#mrsyuskofavorite#mrsyuskotop10@shauna.yusko

(Some have already been posted this summer, some have not). Without further ado: 73/75: My FAVORITE books for MIDDLE SCHOOL this summer! All of these titles perfectly nail that middle school voice, and everything it means to be a tween/young teen: friends, family, school, and figuring out who you are. These should be first purchases for grades 5-8. Go get your copies NOW! #summerreading#summerreading2017#yalit#middlegrade#booksuggestions#readingrecommendations#teachersofinstagram#librariansofinstagram#bookstagram#bookaday#mrsyuskofavorite#mrsyuskotop10@shauna.yusko
